TLA Summer Patio Pub

While summer 2017 weather has been unpredictable, those with faith didn't let a few dark clouds or drops of rain discourage them from coming out to our inaugural TLA Summer Pub event at Oasis Rooftop Patio. The payoff was a terrific evening of food, conversation and fun.  Everyone in attendance agreed the event was a success. Pictures are available on our the TLA Facebook page.


5th Annual Bench and Bar Young Lawyers Soiree

The Fifth Annual Bench and Bar Young Lawyers Soiree was a sell-out. Held in the Courthouse Library, this beautiful space was full of lively chatter amongst members and guests from the judiciary.

Peter W. Hogg, Q.C., provided opening remarks to our guests. Professor Hogg spoke on the drafting of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its effect on Canadian constitutional law. His remarks were warmly received by the young professionals and members of the judiciary in attendance.

An Author's Talk with Norman Bacal

Heenan Blaikie was one of Canada's preeminent law firms with 1,100 employees. It once had on its letterhead former prime ministers Pierre Trudeau and Jean Chrétien, former Quebec premier Pierre-Marc Johnson, and former Supreme Court of Canada justice Michel Bastarache. Then, in February 2014, the firm astonishingly and quickly collapsed. The legal and the business communities were stunned. What happened?! 

TLA was pleased to host an evening with Norman Bacal as he was interviewed by journalist Drew Hasselback about Bacal’s recent book: “Breakdown – The Inside Story of the Rise and Fall of Heenan Blaikie”. Mark Gannage, TLA Trustee, acted as the moderator for the evening.

 

 


Travel the Rotunda Travel Show & Soiree

TLA members and guests enjoyed a brand new social event when they came to tour a unique travel show in our TLA Lawyers Lounge.  Organized through Expedia CruiseShipCentres,  It was a packed house with presentations and displays from top travel companies. Guests enjoyed give-aways, prizes, wine and hors d'ouevres while taking advantage of great specials to plan upcoming vacations.


 

Small Firm Soiree:  Growing a Successful Practice

  TLA marked the start of 2017 by hosting its first joint event with Thomson Reuters Legal Canada to launch a new partnership to assist small law firms with 1-3 lawyers starting their own practice. Attendees learned about the programs and product discounting for TLA members, designed to add value to membership. The Hon. Colin Campbell, Q.C., retired justice of the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario and Monica Goyal, lawyer and engineer discussed spoke about how technology can be economically and effectively utilized in small law firms to grow a successful practice.  Guests enjoyed complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres in the beautiful Courthouse library.

3rd Annual Billiards with the Bar: Chalk One Up Against Hunger

The 3rd annual Billiards with the Bar was a great success. Co-hosted by Neuberger & Partners LLP, Hull & Hull LLP, Toronto Lawyers Association and The Law Society Foundation, the event raised over $9,600 for Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry. The program launched in 1998 by providing meals once a week.  Today, the program serves meals four times a week.  Each month, the Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program provides over 3,500 meals through the Osgoode Hall cafeteria.


TLA Pub Night

TLA was delighted to host its first-ever pub night for members and their guests from the legal community in the cozy atmosphere of the Chelsea room in the Duke of Westminster.  The Duke provided a great spread including mini fish & chips in newspaper wrappings, sliders, bruschetta, chicken satay and much more. An Author's Talk with The Hon. Marie Corbett, Q.C.

The Honourable Marie Corbett is a former Ontario Superior Court Justice. In her thirty-year career, she was a dedicated crusader for social justice and reform of environmental, family, and pension law.  TLA was pleased to host this event which offered an unique opportunity to hear from the author firsthand as she discussed her book,  "January:  A Woman Judge's Season of Disillusion”, with TLA member John Rosen.  Mr. Rosen is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers who has practiced as a trial and appellate lawyer in the areas of criminal, regulatory and discipline law for over 40 years.  Mark Gannage, TLA Trustee, acted as the moderator for the evening.

Speed Mentoring & Networking Soiree for TLA Members

TLA was pleased to host its first Speed Mentoring session in the Court House Library on September 22nd. The event was organised as a series of short, focused conversations about profession related questions. Mentees had an opportunity to meet with up to six mentors in 10‐minute time slots allowing for opportunities to speak with a diverse group of Toronto lawyers about their professional experience. The evening began with refreshments at 5:30 p.m. with opening remarks from Kerry Boniface of the Law Society of Upper Canada at 6:00 p.m.  After the mentor sessions there was an opportunity for more networking at the end of the evening.   Participants commented that the event was extremely helpful and enjoyable.

The Hon. Ian Binnie, formerly of the Supreme Court provided opening remarks to our guests. His Honour's advice for young professionals and humorous remarks were warmly received by the young professionals and members of the judiciary in attendance.

5th Annual Diversity Soiree

An enthusiastic crowd was in attendance to celebrate the diversity of the Toronto legal community and the establishment of the Roundtable of Diversity Associations (RODA).  This year's soiree was preceded by the 1st Annual Diversity Conference.

The highlight was the Opening Remarks given by The Hon. Mr. Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of Canada's Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

TLA Soirees are a great chance to socialize and chat about areas of mutual interest in an informal and collegial atmosphere. TLA Bench and Bar receptions are always popular, and usually held in the Lawyers Lounge in the Court House at 361 University. 

In January, we took the the party on the road and brought it to professionals in Uptown Toronto.

Regus, the world’s largest provider of flexible workspaces hosted the event in the Madison Executive office space., located in downtown North York, on Yonge Street just south of Sheppard Avenue. Refreshments and socializing were enjoyed by all who attended.

Attendees enjoyed an evening of elegance and dance with a Parisian theme, continuous music from the John Street Band and a DJ, sumptuous gourmet dinner, entertainment and show, cash bar and silent auction.  All in the lovely atmosphere of the historic Palais Royale.
