Lawyers Share Their Tailored Definitions of Success by Stewart Lewis, Writer & Photographer
Women in private law practice are finding new ways to achieve success. Moving beyond the well-worn notion of "work-life balance" a panel of four lawyers of different ages, engaged in different types of practice, shared the challenges they face and how they are managing them at the Toronto Lawyers Association CPD event on October 25th.
"You need to look at your life, seeing your career in one corner and your life outside work in another and decide where you want to be", says Joanne Stewart, Partner and Practice Leader of the Family Law Group in the Toronto office of Lerners LLP. For example, she says, if you're a person who needs eight hours of sleep at night, you probably should consider a path other than litigation. With work days sometimes spanning from 6 am to 10 pm, even finding time to have dinner can be a challenge, she adds.
